Parade to highlight Rancho Bernardo 'Spirit of the Fourth'

“Today’s youth, America’s future” is the parade theme, one very appropriate according to its grand marshal, Poway Unified School District Superintendent John Collins.

“(The theme) is especially significant during these most challenging times for public education in our country,” Collins said.

Serving as grand marshal “is a great honor,” he said since “celebrating the Fourth of July at this parade has been a tradition for my family for many years.”

Joining Collins in the 3:30 p.m. parade will be Raquel Ann Kemper, Garrett C. Weir and Matthew S. Weir — the elementary, middle and high school Spirit of the Fourth patriotic essay contest winners.

Parade Chairman Dave Brooks said organizers chose to honor youth because that is a group not honored in recent parades, which recognized the military, fire and police departments and government officials.

In addition, Brooks said this is the first year Del Norte High’s marching band will be in the parade, bringing the number of bands to five. Del Norte Nighthawks will be joined by Rancho Bernardo High’s Royal Regiment, Poway High’s Emerald Brigade, Mt. Carmel’s Marching Sundevils and Westview High Gold.

The parade will start at 3:30 p.m. Monday, July 4 on Acena Drive near the Rancho Bernardo Post Office. It will travel north along Acena, west along Rancho Bernardo Road, south on Bernardo Center Drive and conclude by going east on Lomica Drive. As of Friday, there were more than 50 entrants, according to Brooks.

In addition to the high school bands, other youth participants will include several baton twirling groups (YMCA Diamond Twirlers, Sweethearts and Heartbreakers Twirling Team, Dazzler Twirling Team and County Montessori School Twirlers); Cub Scouts in Packs 627, 657, 658 and 681; YMCA dance team and RB girls softball.

Also riding will be Miss Rancho Bernardo Lauren Menzer, Miss San Diego County Allison Boettcher and Hollyanne Setola, named “Most Inspiring” at the Miss California USA pageant.

Among service groups will be the Rancho Bernardo Lions, Rotary, Sunrise Rotary and Shrine clubs (the latter accompanied by the Shriners’ Tin Lizzies).

On the patriotic front will be members of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Military Order of World Wars, Legion of Valor, National Guard, U.S. Marine Corps and U.S. Navy.

There will also be a contingent of elected officials, businesses, organizations and community volunteers.
