Pongsaklek cruises to comfortable victory
In his second defence after regaining the crown from Japan's Koki Kameda last year, Pongsaklek was too good for the Japanese fighter.
In a relatively one-sided bout, the three judges gave it 117-111, 116-112 and 118-110 in favour of the 112-pound champion.
Although he is eight years older, the 34-year-old Pongsaklek was the better boxer and easily kept Kogawa at bay throughout the 12-round fight.
Kogawa, who normally boxes at the 115-pound division, tried to use his speed and reach advantage but rarely caused trouble for the Thai.
With the win, Pongsaklek's record is now 81-3-1 (44KOs) while Kogawa suffered his second loss against 17 wins.
Pongsaklek's handlers plan to arrange a lucrative mandatory fight against Edgar Sosa of Mexico in December.
The Nakhon Ratchasima native is regarded as one of the best fighters in the division. He was crowned WBC flyweight champion for the first time by stopping Malcolm Tunacao of the Philippines in the first round in March 2001.
He made 17 successful defences before losing to Japan's Daisuke Naito by a split decision in 2007. He won back the title last March in Japan by beating Kameda who had defeated Naito.
Six months later, Pongsaklek made the first defence of his second spell by defeating compatriot Suriyan Por Chokchai in Si Sa Ket.
Pongsaklek is Thailand's only world boxing champion at the moment.
