What did our ancestors do in their spare time? Visitors to Charnwood Museum have the chance to find out exactly what they did with a fascinating exhibition exploring the story of sport in medieval England.
The free exhibition, ‘A Bit of Rough and Tumble’, illustrates a range of medieval sporting pastimes from spectacular jousting tournaments and popular hunting pursuits to early forms of ball games. It also demonstrates how some sports were not only a pleasurable way of passing the time, but were also necessary and important training opportunities for battle and warfare. The exhibition is on display at the museum from 2 July – 25 September.

Discovering Charnwood Forest: 2nd July – 28th August 2011

Festival of British Archaeology Events (16th - 31st July)

Festival of British Archaeology Display: Available until 22nd August 2011
Charnwood Museum is displaying some of the unique objects from the Rothley Bronze Age Axe Hoard. The finds, discovered in May 2009, date from around 1020 – 800 BC. Free
Hallaton Treasure Roadshow: Tuesday 26th July
10.30am – 12.30, 1.30 – 4pm
Celebrate the Festival of British Archaeology and explore the mysteries of the Iron Age as the Hallaton Treasure Roadshow visits Charnwood Museum! Learn more about the treasure and enjoy some children’s activities – you can even stamp your own coin! Free
Fossil Fest!: Wednesday 27th July
A children’s craft workshop to celebrate the Festival of British Archaeology. One of the oldest fossils ever discovered was found here in Charnwood Forest. Have a go at ‘sand casting’ to create your own ancient-looking fossil! Please contact Charnwood Museum for further details and to book a place.
