Back Then - City officially put under blockade in July 1861
100 years agoJuly 7, 1911: Swift justice – two days after being arrested for speeding and reckless driving, two men were sentenced to 20 days on the county road gang. The “recklessness” involved a wreck that happened in front of the house of Sheriff S.P. Cowan, out on the oyster shell road to Wrightsville Beach.
July 10, 1911: A large advertisement declared that Wrightsville Beach was a “safe refuge from typhoid, malaria or hay fever. No flies – no mosquitoes.” The drinking water, the ad claimed, came from 400-foot-deep wells and was “noted for its tonic qualities and recommended by physicians for tired mothers, delicate children and all who need recuperation.”
July 14, 1911: A man was found not guilty of assault after he threatened his wife’s preacher with a thrashing. It seems that D. Riddick of Church of the Holy Saints practiced a ritual in which all women of the church kissed the preacher. The husband of one of the faithful, Will Sentee, took offense to the ritual as well as the practice of women of the church being banned from cooking on Saturdays.
50 years agoJuly 3, 1961: Yes, Echo Farms Country Club once was a working dairy farm. A feature in the Star noted that the farm not only bred all its cattle but also grew the grain that fed them.
July 7, 1961: School board chairman E.A. Laney announced that William Hampton Wagoner had been appointed superintendent of New Hanover County schools. Wagoner, 34, had been serving in the same role in the Elizabeth City schools. He was a native of Washington, N.C., and served in the Navy and attended Wake Forest, East Carolina and N.C. State universities. (In 1968, Wagoner became fourth president of Wilmington College. After one year, the college became part of the University of North Carolina system and Wagoner was elevated to the position of chancellor. He died in 1999).
July 7, 1961: In the what-a-difference-50-years-makes category . . . The N.C. Board of Education gave public school teachers a 22.4 percent pay increase as part of Gov. Terry Sanford's “quality education” program. The new salary range for teachers with no experience would be $3,607.50 and $5,078.25 for teachers with at least 12 years of experience. The latter figure is around $36,600.00 in today's dollars.

The first tee, home of the long drive contest, was anchored by the tournament’s MCs, NBC news anchor Craig Melvin and Fox News’ Ainsley Earhardt, who were equal opportunity needlers, making (good-natured) fun of both fans and celebrities. The 10th tee was home to a grill and a pair of guitars that led to impromptu performances by many musicians and some golfers (see John Daly video below). Fans weren’t the only people flocking to the event. The Golf Channel was in town filming a one-hour special on the tournament, ESPN.com covered the event, and radio stations from New York City, Dallas, Pittsburgh and Columbia broadcast live. Comcast SportsNet-DC was also on-site filming a 30-minute special on Myrtle Beach golf and the tournament. The 2010 Monday After The Masters Tournament featured one of the most star-laden fields in tournament history. Professional wrestling legend Ric Flair, NFL Hall of Famer Dan Marino, former Chicago Bears quarterback Jim McMahon, former Cleveland Browns quarterback Bernie Kosar, NASCAR drivers Kyle Petty and Michael Waltrip, and LPGA golfer and Conway native Kristy McPherson played. The PGA Tour was represented by Woody Austin, Ricky Barnes, Ben Bates, Rich Beem, Mark Blakefield, Kris Blanks, Josh Broadaway, Scott Brown, Kris Cox, Chris DiMarco, Ken Duke, Matt Every, Tommy “Two Gloves” Gainey, Robert Gamez, Bill Kratzert, Cliff Kresge, Spencer Levin, Mark Lye, John Maginnes, William McGirt, Jim McGovern, David Mobley, Garth Mulroy, Larry Rinker, Lee Rinker, Charlie Rymer, Darren Stiles and Nicholas Thompson.
