Back-tracking with vintage albums from Paul McCartney and a Dean Martin DVD

Another musical highlight is the great “Suicide,” which finally appears on this DVD after being weirdly edited out of the “One Hand Clapping” film that had accompanied last year’s deluxe “Band on the Run.” Unfortunately the film quality on that track is still sub-par, but the song itself is a must-have for McCartney fans. It did have a hit in “Coming Up,” though U.S. radio far preferred the live take to the electronic studio version that McCartney favored. “McCartney II” also contains one of the finest and most underrated ballads McCartney has ever written in the beautiful “Waterfalls.” But “Temporary Secretary,” and most of the rest of these could have been left on the cutting room floor without any great loss 31 years ago. They’ve actually managed to turn this thing into a four disc “deluxe” edition as well with a 128-page hardbound book and various outtakes, remixes, etc. “Blue Sway,” with Richard Niles orchestration is quite lovely, though other cuts like “Mr. H Atom” and “All You Horse Riders,” are ghastly, especially for a man of McCartney’s talent. The DVD is highlighted by three different takes of “Coming Up,” including the very clever music video in which McCartney dons several disguises while playing all the instruments. Featuring the biggest stars in the business, a number of episodes have been issued recently in three different DVD configurations, including a single DVD, a double DVD and a six-DVD “Collector’s Edition.”

Definitely a product of the era, the comedy often does seem dated, most due to societal changes in the years since these originally aired. But it’s still great seeing Martin paired with plenty of his legendary friends in shows that were often extremely loose and spontaneous in their approach.

Among the many guests on the double-DVD set (which contains seven episodes) are show business superstars including Jack Benny, John Wayne (actually singing a little), George Burns, Jimmy Stewart, Sammy Davis, Jr., Orson Welles, Rodney Dangerfield and others. Most, including Martin, have since passed away, adding an extra layer of sentimentality to seeing this, though the very much alive Don Rickles and Andy Griffith also are featured.
