Dogs take over park

Alex Callahan was determined to teach Fatty to walk through a Slinky-like tube at the fifth annual Bark in the Park event in Corning on Saturday.

And when voice commands were not enough to convince Amanda Taylor's English bulldog to venture into the tube, Callahan, 7, got down on his hands and knees and showed Fatty how it was done.

In the end, it was easier to convince Fatty to step over a low steeple.

It was just part of the fun and games several dozen people and their dogs had at Northside Park, a fundraiser for Second Chance Pet Rescue.

Debbie Eaglebarger, caretaker at the Corning Animal Shelter and founder of Second Chance Pet Rescue, said Fatty actually tested out pretty high on the IQ test for dogs that was part of the day's activities.

She said she conducted about 25 tests.

"This is the first year we invited dogs," said Eaglebarger. "We were kind of apprehensive about it because we thought there might be altercations."

But all went smoothly, and the event raised $3,874, not quite enough to pay for all the projects the group would like to complete at the Corning Animal Shelter this summer.

"We would like to raise the center (up) so when it floods, the dogs can stay outside," said Pat Panko, who has been a volunteer with Second Chance Pet Rescue for six years.

That is part of a project in which new pens also would be installed. The total cost is close to $10,000, and Eaglebarger said they are probably about $2,000 short.

In addition to that, supporters can also donate specifically to the Weaver fund, which goes to the care of the dogs outside the basic facility costs.

The fund was named after a dog that had to have a leg amputated.

Other dogs that have received care through the fund includes Winnie, who came in with a gunshot wound.

Weaver and several other shelter dogs, including a few available for adoption, were at the park, along with the personal pets of a number of people who came out to support the cause.

Carly, 7, and Leah, 10, Settles had their own cause: Convince mom to bring a puppy home with them to Paradise.

The number-one choice, Shea, a 3-month-old Rottweiler-German shepherd mix seemed just as eager to adopt the sisters.

Shea actually ended up in a different home, but the Settles sisters still got their dog — a terrier-mix named Farley.

Louis | Georgia English Bulldog Rescue

This is Louis; our 17th rescue for the year!  He is happy, healthy, neutered and up to date on his shots.   He is 4 1/2 (will be 5 in November).   He is pretty playful and athletic.  He loves his toys a little too much and has been labeled toy aggressive and possessive by his previous owner.   We know he likes dogs and children but we do not know if he likes cats.  Since he loves his toys SO much we will be keeping them away from his foster sisters until he learns to share.   Louis is an owner surrender but it was not a decision that came easily for his owner.   He has been well taken care of all of his life but due to some changes in his owner’s life she thought it would be best to re-home him.  Louis is ready for adoption so please send in your adoption application today! Our mission is to first ensure the safety and well-being of all English Bulldogs that we take in and second to educate the public in the care of English Bulldogs. We rehabilitate and re-home English Bulldogs that are sick, neglected, abused, or injured. Moreover, we provide a safe alternative to shelters for owners that are faced with the already difficult decision of finding a new home for their English bulldog. We have rescued over 50 bulldogs in our first 18 months of operation. We have approximately 20 ENGLISH BULLDOGS in foster care at any given time. At this time, we are unable to offer owners financial help when faced with a medical or surgical emergency. We hope to be able to offer some assistance in the future. Georgia English Bulldog Rescue, Inc., (GEBR) was incorporated in January 2009 as a non-stock, non-profit corporation with Federal Tax Exemption as a public charity under Section 501 (c) 3 of the Internal Revenue Code. Please we need DONATIONS as our Vet bills are staggering. We also need volunteers, supplies, and support for the care, treatment, transportation, and administrative needs of the rescued English Bulldogs that we take into our organization. We rely solely on your generous donations. 100% of our donations go to the care and treatment of all of the English Bulldog rescues we take in.
