Review: Drive
Directed by Nicolas Winding RefnOn the surface, Drive is effortlessly elegant, old-school film that revels in retro fashion. Yet, as Simon Kinnear reveals, under the hood lurks a disturbing character study.
It has become a cliché to recognize the debt owed by the Brats film from the 1970s to the European writers of the 1950s and 1960s.Woody Allen idolized Ingmar Bergman, Paul Schrader has written a book on Bresson and Dreyer, Brian De Palma and Francis Ford Coppola ripped-off Antonioni's Blow-Up, and Scorsese films littered with allusions to Godard and Visconti.
Yet perhaps the most blatant steal from a herd of genre filmmakers - Walter Hill, Michael Mann and William Friedkin - who took a look at the existential thriller by Jean-Pierre Melville, including Samurai Hitman film, and said, "That's great, but clearly what is needed is a good car chase." Hill The driver, Friedkin to live and die In LAThief Melville and Mann relocated lone wolf archetype, a professional forced to fight for control by the disorder of life, the urban jungle of America and provided Hollywood with a new model for his thrillers.
These films share a world of smooth surfaces and the ostentatious style, fueled by both the electronica and fashion modish Left like ripples of their stories sine wave between inactivity and powerful glacial action. If this approach was appealing pop art that has bled into other genres, from gangster (Scarface De Palma) to the drama of characters (American Gigolo Schrader).
It is fair to say that Nicolas Winding Refn has seen most if not all of these films. It is also very likely that the Danish director realizes that his first American film takes the late existential thriller for its European settlers. Refn restages blithely that the familiar style late-70s/early-80s elegantly retro studied, from the pink graphics to scribble synths pulsing score by Cliff Martinez. As anti-hero of the film, Ryan Gosling channels ambiguous, amoral blankness of pretty boy Ryan O'Neal in the driver and Richard Gere in American Gigolo - in many ways, the character Gosling himself is a gigolo, but he who cars attracted rather than women.
There is more to drive than the postmodern appropriation of the old school of cinema. Refn and Gosling are astute enough to recognize that this small group of film actually has a sub-genre, with codes and symbols to be deconstructed and reinvented. There is something about the hero obsessed sociopath / repressed influences Drive, then turns his Refn film in a satirical review of a guy who gives up human society for the thrill of anonymous drive.
unenreper: Images Of America
I have searched the internet on this and had no luck.. i'm 20 weeks pregnant and Canadian married to a USC. I went for my medical today and had all of my backup for vaccinations / immunity but the immigration doctor wants me to get a tetanus shot. All information on the web says this is "safe" during pregnancy, however I am completely opposed to having a vaccination while pregnant or breast-feeding due to potential issues vaccinations can cause (eg: autism in children). While this is not readily "accepted" by the medical community, it is how I feel. Some very high profile people have talked about vaccinations and the dangers they can cause but the medical community seems to reject their logic (not enough studies.. who knows).
