Goodwill open for business in August
Goodwill, one of the nation’s largest non-profit employers of people with disabilities and other barriers to employment, is coming to Porterville.
The retail store and donation center is expected to open up shop in August, and employ 15 to 20 people, according to Ken Beurmann, vice president of business development for Goodwill Industries of South Central California.
Interviews were conducted Monday at the store’s future location, in a 6,000-square-foot building formerly occupied by Susie’s Deals in the Save Mart Shopping Center on Henderson Avenue.
The organization seeks to serve individuals with barriers to employment which include mental and physical disabilities, limited work history, limited education, limited English-speaking, lack of job skills, and basic skills deficiencies.
Beurmann said that the move to Porterville was part of the organization’s 2011-2013 Strategic Plan, which seeks to expand into new markets in Kings and Southern Tulare County.
“We looked at Porterville, Tulare, Hanford, and Lemoore, and decided Porterville was the best fit at the time,” Beurmann said, noting that the demographics were “very fitting” and the company felt Porterville had a need for employment opportunities.
Porterville’s Community Development Director Brad Dunlap said the jobs will be, to some degree, replacement jobs for those lost when Susie’s Deals closed, but the move means that the building will not be a long-term vacant space and will keep the shopping center filled and vibrant.
It is unknown how many employees were laid off when Susie’s Deals closed and several attempts by The Recorder to reach the company were unsuccessful.
According to Beurman, the Goodwill store will be completely self-sustainable through community donations and all revenue generated at the Porterville store will go to employment and workforce development programs offered to store employees.
A donation trailer where the public can drop off donations will be available by the end of the week, at the Save Mart Shopping Center, 910 W. Henderson Ave.
Porterville Goodwill will be the 10th store owned and operated by Goodwill Industries of South Central California.
The organization owns six stores in Bakersfield, one in Delano, one in Taft and one in Ridgecrest.
