British firm suspends sales of sprouting seeds over feared link to French E ...
But Paul Hansord, managing director of Thompson & Morgan, said last night that it was “highly unlikely” that seeds supplied by his firm were to blame for the outbreak and insisted he had no plans to recall the products from shops and customers who have already bought them.
Environmental health officers have taken samples of the seeds from the the company’s premises in Ipswich, Suffolk, so they can be tested for any trace of the E-coli bug. The results are expected within four days.
Mr Hansard said: “We have sold many hundreds of thousands of packets of sprouting seeds to home gardeners for several years without any reported problems.
“In particular we have sold around 100,000 packets of sprouting seeds in France from more than 500 outlets just since last November.
“All of the seeds came from the same batch and have been on sale in France for many months so if there had been a problem with them, we would have expected it to have emerged earlier.
“To date there have been no reported incidents of any problems, either in France, the UK or anywhere else they are sold.
“There is only a very slim chance that this type of illness can be carried in seeds and we believe it is highly unlikely that they are to blame.
“But if sprouting seeds are grown in unhygienic conditions then it can be an excellent environment for E-coli to multiply.
“We note that the French outbreak seems to be localised to a specific event which would indicate to us that something local in the Bordeaux area, or the way the product has been handled and grown, is responsible for the incident rather than our seeds.”
He said the firm had a call from its agent in France late on Friday night, reporting that the French secretary of state for consumer affairs Frederic Lefebvre had named Thompson & Morgan as the supplier of the seeds.
Thompson & Morgan is one of the UK’s largest mail order seed companies. The firm was established in Ipswich, Suffolk, in 1855 by baker’s son William Thompson and is still based in the town.
It supplies hundreds of varieties of flower and vegetable seeds to garden centres across the UK and all over Europe from its distribution base on the outskirts of Ipswich.
The firm also supplies gardeners directly with seed orders that can be placed on its website or through its mail order catalogues.
