Travis County mulls 3 percent tax rate increase for 2012

Travis County officials are considering a 3 percent tax rate increase for the 2012 fiscal year.

The average homestead, with a property assessed at $266,000 ($212,800 after a 20 percent exemption), would see a $33.95 tax increase, for a total tax bill of $1,050.59 under the current version of the draft budget, Budget Director Leroy Nellis said.

Members of Travis County's Planning and Budget Office gave an update of the county's 2012 budget process at the June 7 Commissioners Court meeting.

Nellis said the rate may go from $0.4794 to $0.4937. He said that the numbers are subject to change and that the county would have a better idea of the proposed tax rate when it receives more information from the Travis County Appraisal District in late July.

Planning and Budget Office representatives suggested that the county set up a reserve to address budget areas that will be hit hard by state budget cuts.

County staff said some of the upcoming year's challenges include the end of stimulus funds and an increased employee retirement rate.

In a May 31 memo to the court, Nellis wrote that the Planning and Budget Office does not anticipate the county being able to offer any salary increases to employees next year.

The court will receive another budget update during its June 28 meeting.
