Bikes, Brew, BBQ: Good Turnout for Heritage Port Event

WHEELING - Motorcycles lined up along Water Street Saturday for the second annual Bikes, Brew and Barbecue Cook-Off at Wheeling Heritage Port.

Seasonable weather brought out a good crowd for the event, which organizers said went very well.

Megan Simcox of Valley Harley-Davidson, one of the event sponsors, said, "It's been going pretty well. We've had a lot of foot traffic."

Kenneth Jones, of Clarington, noted it was his first time to attend the event. His son entered a bike in the show.

"They've got a lot of bikes here today," he said. "Guys do a lot of work in cleaning them up. It's real nice."

Another visitor, Dan Miller of Morristown added, "I think this is nice. I think this is what they need to do in Wheeling to bring people into town. It's a real nice thing."

In addition to the the bike show, vendors served up a variety of food, along with barbecued ribs, while several area bands performed on the Heritage Port stage.

Organizer Bill Brooks added, "Everything's gone great. We're reaching our goal. People are fellowshipping with each other and having a good time. This has been a success."

Winners in the bike show were Art Piatt of St. Clairsville in the metric cruiser and sport division; Barb Marple of Wheeling in the trike division; Jeff Marple of Wheeling in the custom division; Grover Brogan of Valley Grove in the vintage division; and Drew Hindman of Steubenville in the Harley-Davidson division.

Barbecue winners were Holy Smoke of Barnesville for chicken and R-n-T of Wheeling for ribs. The People's Choice Award went to Smokey Shack. R-n-T of Wheeling won the overall grand prize for the best barbecue.

The Black Heritage Festival Committee and Carenbauer Distributing sponsored the event with Valley Harley-Davidson.

Harleys are works of art. And they are works of art that you can customize into your work of art. Here we will present a number of customizing options for the XL 1200N. Online software allows you to select these options and get a look at what you can do to make your bike an evocative expression of you. In this edition to this series we will look at just a few of the thousands of choices available to if you are customising a Harley Davidson Sportster XL 1200N.

Engine chrome kits have become must haves. Chroming up a Sportster is so common these days that stock looks bare without it. Engine chrome kits typically include chrome covers for gear, transmission sprocket, chain inspection and derby covers, inside and outside rockers and, of course, all gaskets.

The head bolt bridge is a chrome cover exclusive to the Sportster line. It is designed to complement the frames luscious curves. It covers the sparkplug as well as the head bolts.

Oil tank and battery covers for customising a Harley Davidson are sold in pairs. This is because they sit opposite each other upon the engine, with the battery cover on the left and the oil tank on the right. The chrome covers are specially molded to follow the curvature of the bike.

The base of the dual cylinders on the left of the engine can be chrome. This nicely fills the gap between the engine and the cylinder flanges. Looks best with chrome gaskets.

The fat rear end of the XL 1200 cries out for enhancements. Several options are available. The swing arm can be chrome. So can the upper and lower belt guards. Customising a Harley Davidson XL 1200 N is the fulfillment of a dream. Make your Sportster an expression of you.
