Creston RCMP probe drowning of SAR's Sheilah Sweatman | VANCOUVERITE
CRESTON, BC –British Columbia Coroners Services, WorkSafe BC and Creston RCMP have opened investigations into the drowning of 29-year old Sheilah Sweatman, a volunteer with the SAR (Search and Rescue) Swift Water Specialists after teammates completed the grim recovery of her body at noon on Thursday.
Sweatman who lived in Ymir, a small community near Nelson BC, originally came from Monitoba. She served about two years with SAR and was assigned to the Kootenay Swift Water Specialists Team at the time of her death.
“It is a tragic day for BC Volunteer Search and Rescue Team members from across BC, who saw the loss of a teammate yesterday,” said Cpl Dan Moskaluk. The death of Sheilah Sweatman marks the first time in BC SAR history that one of the province’s SAR volunteers was killed while in service. The RCMP and communities across BC offer their sincerest condolences to her family and coworkers.”
Two tow trucks are assisting the SAR teams to haul the submerged vehicle out of the water to confirm whether there were other occupants inside.
