Woman held for bank robbery

CHICAGO (AP) - A Chicago woman has been charged with robbing a suburban bank of $120,000 earlier this year while wearing a mask and nun habit.

Federal court documents indicate Navahcia Edwards formerly worked at the TCF Bank branch in Palos Heights that was robbed May 29.

Authorities say Edwards and a male accomplice, who remains at large, wore the nun outfits and displayed weapons during the robbery of the bank.

The FBI says a costume shop's records show Edwards purchased two masks 10 days before the robbery, adding the same credit card was used to purchase the nun costumes.

The bank robbery charge filed Thursday against Edwards is the second she faces. Earlier in June, Edwards was charged in connection with the robbery of a Chase Bank branch in Country Club Hills.

Repeated DUI offender gets eight years

ROLLING MEADOWS, Ill. (AP) - A suburban Chicago woman charged with six DUIs, and who turned up in court intoxicated, has been sentenced to eight years in prison.

Sandra Uher of Elgin was eligible for a 30-year prison sentence because of her previous convictions. However, Cook County Circuit Judge Kay Hanlon handed the 54-year-old Uher the shorter prison time and a $6,950 fine after the woman apologized.

Uher said Thursday she has an addiction, and is doing her best to deal with it.

Prosecutors say Uher must complete at least 50 percent of her sentence before she is eligible for parole.

During a traffic stop in March, police say Uher failed a sobriety test and had a preliminary blood-alcohol level of .30, nearly four times the legal limit.

Uher has DUI convictions dating to 1997.

County pulls plug on security plan

CHICAGO (AP) - Cook County officials have ended "Project Shield," a security program designed to equip 128 municipal police departments with cameras in squad cars and at stationary locations capable of sending live video back to command centers in the event of a terrorist attack.

County Board President Toni Preckwinkle said Thursday the problems with the program have been documented and officials undertook a careful review of the problems.

Cook County Homeland Security and Emergency Management director Mike Masters said the system was "ill-conceived, poorly designed and badly executed."

According to Preckwinkle and Masters, the program was plagued by equipment failures and frustration from area police chiefs. IBM, the first contractor, was released by the county. A second contractor, Johnson Controls International, had no better success in creating an operational system.

Reports of military movement to the India-Pakistan border must raise alarums in Washington DC. The last thing that the incoming Obama administration wants is a firestorm in South Asia. There cannot be a limited war in the subcontinent, given the imbalance of forces between India and Pakistan. Any Indian attack across the border into Pakistan will likely be met with a full scale response from Pakistan. Yet, the rhetoric that seemed to have cooled down after the immediate aftermath of the Mumbai attacks is rising again. It was exactly this kind of aggressive posturing and public statements that led to the 1971 conflict between these two neighbors. Pakistan has relied in the past on international intervention to prevent war. It worked, except in 1971 when the US and other powers let India invade East Pakistan and lead to the birth of Bangladesh. What makes the current situation especially dangerous is that both are now nuclear weapon states with anywhere up to150 nuclear bombs in their arsenal. If India and Pakistan go to war, the world will lose. Big time. By putting conventional military pressure on Pakistan, is India calling what it perceives to be Pakistan�s bluff under the belief that the United Sates will force nuclear restraint on Pakistan? The early evidence after the Mumbai terrorist attack pointed to the absence of the Pakistan government�s involvement in the attack.
