Which is a neat trick considering the revolving door the band has been since its founding in 1968. Almost every album over the years has yielded a slightly different Yes. When the band played Constellation Brands-Marvin Sands Performing Arts Center last year, founding singer Jon Anderson — sidelined by serious respiratory issues — had been replaced by former Yes tribute-band singer Benoit David, and keyboardist Oliver Wakeman was filling the slot often held in the past by his father, Rick Wakeman. Such changes are part of the life of a band in for the long haul, with only a couple brief hiatuses. Bassist Chris Squire — the only constant member for the band’s 43 years — says he doesn’t think there is a definitive “Yes sound” — it’s always a function of what the individual writers and singers bring to the table, each time around. After a couple years promoting the 2001 disc, “2004 came around and we were thinking about doing a new album and tour — and that’s when Jon became a bit uneasy with his breathing.” Anderson would be plagued by serious asthma attacks for the next several years, and the band largely was on hiatus. “We were going to go on tour in 2008 — and just before we were going to go, Jon had a really bad respiratory attack, so we delayed the tour; we drifted.” Despite something of a suite opening the album — with six tracks under the “Fly From Here” name with subtitles (“Sad Night at the Airfield,” “Bumpy Ride,” etc.), tracks that evoke images of 1950s/60s air travel — Squire is reluctant to identify any underlying themes or concepts for the disc. “We don’t really go into an album thinking like that,” he said. “The lyrics are by different people in the band. I wrote lyrics, Steve Howe wrote lyrics, Trevor Horn wrote lyrics as well. ... We look at each song individually. Even though the ‘Fly From Here’ suite — it does have that kind of air-filled theme, taking it back in time to that mid-20th century period.
