County Fair salutes Golden Gate Bridge

Farley called upon some significant historians to help fairgoers appreciate the famous bridge — some of the workers who helped erect it will be on hand to tell stories about the effort it took to bring the project to fruition. Eleven men died building the bridge. Until early 1937, there had been only one fatality, setting a record in a field where one man killed for every million dollars spent had been the norm. However, on Feb. 17, 1937, 10 men lost their lives when a section of scaffold carrying 12 men fell through the safety net. A variety of exhibits, historic photographs and activities will engage visitors as they learn and reflect on the history and present-day operations of this international symbol. Fairgoers will enter a special pavilion via a 48-foot-long model of the bridge before stepping off and observing how the ongoing multi-year multimillion-dollar retrofit is taking place section by section to withstand a major earthquake. A wall of memorabilia follows, with photos covering the five years from the start of construction in January 1933 to May 28, 1937, when a grand auto parade crossed the bridge and officially opened it to traffic. Headline music acts include Three Dog Night, Toots and the Maytals, 7 Walkers, Ozomatli, the Temptations and the Pointer Sisters. The Shangri-La Chinese Acrobats will perform three shows daily and there will be 28 free carnival rides, fireworks every night (at 9:30 p.m., over the lagoon), more than 12,000 exhibits, barnyard animals and Ben & Jerry’s Solar Stage, featuring an eclectic array of entertainment.
