Marriage a hot topic at Twin Cities Pride Festival
MINNEAPOLIS -- It's pride weekend in the Twin Cities, an annual celebration for the gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender community.
At Saturday's Twin Cities Pride Festival in Loring Park, the talk was all about New York's new gay marriage law and Minnesota's upcoming vote on a marriage amendment.
T-shirts reading, "I love New York" could be seen everywhere celebrating Friday's decision to make gay marriage legal in that state.
Pride attendee Heather Miller-Schiell said, "It's encouraging. It's a step. It's a step in the right direction."
The news also provides a boost to the mood during the weekend activities. But in a way, it's bittersweet.
Heather McCarl, at the festival with her wife Mary McCarl and their three children said, "I'm really glad that we're moving forward in this country in some places. I'm nervous about the upcoming amendment vote here."
The two were married in Toronto, Canada. But they live in Minnesota and Heather McCarl fears Minnesota could move the opposite direction of New York.
Minnesota lawmakers voted this past spring to put an amendment on the ballot next year that would define marriage as only between a man and woman.
Heather McCarl said life is tough for same-sex couples. She said, "It feels like we really have to jump through a lot of hoops to make sure our family is safe, we can stay together if one of us dies. The situation we're in, I'm not sure she would even be able to stay in our house if I were to pass away." That's because their mortgage is only in her name.
So at Pride, there was an effort to defeat that amendment.
People with clipboards approached attendees asking them to sign a promise to vote no.
Heather and Lori Miller-Shiell have two daughters and have been married in Iowa but not here. Heather Miller-Shiell said, "I am determinedly hopeful that we will not pass this ridiculous constitutional amendment that would enshrine hate in the Minnesota constitution."
Chase Lindberger and K.T. Schmidt just adopted a son. Lindberger said, "The state trusts us to take care of a child but not to take care of each other."
They would all like gay marriage to become legal in Minnesota but for now they can only have commitment ceremonies.
For Donna Bailey and Tamra Doble, the Pride Festival is where they held their commitment ceremony. While it's not New York, they said it is a great place to say they do the only way they can.
