APD unit receives award

The unit received the APD’s unit citation award at a brief ceremony at the department’s Law Enforcement Center on Wednesday afternoon.

The citation, which was put in late last year, internally recognizes employees of APD. Among those at the ceremony was Capt. Russ Barnes, who heads the unit.

In 2010, the homicide solve rate for the APD was 80 percent. The typical average for a police department is around 65 percent, Barnes said.

“This pretty much means that if you commit a homicide in Albany, you will get caught,” he said.

The citation is also deserved in that the unit’s detectives make sure to follow up on cases, and in that they are excellent at establishing a team effort when it comes to their work ethic, the captain added.

“They work well together as a team and they work well together with other bureaus,” Barnes said.

Chief John Proctor presented the detectives with their pins, which are to be placed on their uniforms. They were also presented with letters of commendation and copies of the citation following the ceremony.

“I’m going to say that it is an honor to serve with these individuals,” Lt. Eddie Jones, a detective with the unit, said. “They respond when I call. These individuals sacrifice a lot.

“I’ve been glad to work with them.”

Following the pin presentation, Proctor made some remarks about why the honor was well deserved.

“We have a lot of hardworking people, and our story is not told to the public as often as it should be,” he said. “We are not doing perfect work, but we are doing the best work we can.

“This team is doing great work. I’m happy to hand these (pins) out and I hope to hand out many more.

Lorette Otterbine: How do police earn a California DUI Award Pin?

In California, Police can earn a "10851 award pin" for finding a certain number of stolen vehicles (CVC10851) in a certain time period. I have heard of MADD awarding something similar for arresting drunk drivers. I was wondering if anyone could elaborate on how to earn this award and what is awarded (plaque, pin, certificate, etc). Any links would be appreciated!
