Squash, roses, deciduous azaleas, asters and phlox are just a few of the many plants that are susceptible to powdery mildew fungus disease. It's easy to identify because the leaves look like they're covered with powdered sugar.

The disease usually doesn't do serious damage, especially if it only occurs in fall, but if it attacks early it can weaken the plant by reducing its ability to produce food in the heavily coated leaves.

Odd as it may seem, the easiest way to prevent this problem is to water adequately. Drought-stressed plants are much more susceptible than well-watered ones. Powdery mildew is the only fungus that lives on the outside of the leaves. Therefore, unlike other fungus diseases, such as black spot that lives within the leaves, powdery mildew can be controlled easily if a spray is applied at the first sign of the symptoms.

Many sprays are labeled to control this problem, or in a pinch, a homemade concoction of 2 teaspoons of baking soda and 4 drops of dish detergent in a quart of water works quite well.

Its time to plant beans.

Bush beans (snap beans) are easy to grow, and they're incredibly good for you. Having said that, I grow them because picked right off the vine, they're way more crisp and delicious than anything you can buy at the grocery store.

5 Tips on Growing Bamboo …

You can grow bamboo plants in a small container indoors or plant them along a fence or around the garden in your yard. The 5 tips on growing bamboo that are listed below are mainly for growing bamboo outdoors. The smaller bamboo plants that are trained to grow into neat shapes aren’t always able to be planted outside. Check with the plant supplier you are purchasing your bamboo from to make sure the plant you are buying can be placed outdoors. 5. Place bamboo plants close together

Most plants have to be placed far enough apart to allow the roots to spread out. Bamboo plants actually grow better when they are all bunched together, so give them what they want! Crowd the bamboo shoots close to one another to cause them to grow faster.

4. Select a spot that has lots of sunshine

A few varieties of bamboo will tolerate a bit of shade, but these fast growing plants actually prefer more sun than shade. They will grow well in an area where the sun is shining nearly all day long.

3. Keep plants moist

The indoor bamboo plants are usually grown in rocks, marbles, or some other form of medium that isn’t as dense as soil. These plants basically are held upright by the medium and spend their lives in water. Bamboo plants do love lots of water, so keep your outdoor plants moist as well.
