Expanded Job Corps LPN program meets local needs
Graduates of the Keystone Job Corps Center's licensed practical nursing (LPN) program have not only been able to get jobs, but have been able to advance their health care careers after leaving Keystone.
The LPN program, begun in 2003, has graduated approximately 70 LPNs, many of whom have gone on to become registered nurses, the most advanced class of nursing care.
And this year, a second class was added. Beverly Vespico, the director of the LPN program at Keystone, said the new class was smaller than the first. Each class has a maximum of 20 students.
Recent shortages in the nursing field have caused the creation of nursing designations that require less education, like Certified Nursing Assistants (CNAs), home health aides and nurses' aides.
Jim McGee, Keystone's director, said the LPN program was created at Keystone to help meet the need for trained nurses - and to provide almost guaranteed jobs to those who graduate.
"Keystone had a vision of the need and demand for nurses," McGee said. "The program provides an excellent opportunity for the student to advance their training."
McGee said Keystone already had programs for home health aides and medical office assistants and saw the LPN program an extension of the other programs.
"We wanted to create a way to enhance the students' employment possibilities - with advanced training," McGee said. "We started with about 20 students, and we graduated 18 or 19. That's a 96 percent success rate. For the last four years, we could see the need grow, so we doubled the size of the class last year."
And this year, the LPN curriculum and the CNA curriculum have been added to, McGee said.
"We've added three weeks to the end of the curriculum to add a certification for electronic data records," McGee said. "By getting the extra three-week training, students can become certified. It's another advantage for them in the job market."
McGee said Keystone tries to provide programs to train workers for jobs that are available locally.
"We look at the local job demand - what's available locally," McGee said. "With the way the economy is, we want to meet local job demands as much as possible."
In recent years, McGee said Keystone has added a number of training programs in the medical field, because of the local, state and national job demand. So many programs have been added that Keystone officials would like to build a medical arts building where all of the programs could be housed in one place, under the same roof.
