Ion therapy uses a special electronic device that generates negatively charged particles. Negative ion therapy has been shown to relieve symptoms associated with seasonal affective disorder.

Negative ions contain an extra electron, and are created naturally by the sun, wind and moving water. These molecules, in high enough concentrations, neutralize odors and make air. By themselves, they are imperceptible.

One theory suggests that oxygenation of the blood is increased in highly ionized. There seems to be a link between air ions and mood.Long touted in the literature as a pop mood enhancer, it was not until the 1990s that this environmental factor was evaluated for antidepressant properties. The initial clinical trial by Drs. Michael and Jiuan Su Terman at Columbia, reported in the Journal of Complementary and Alternative Medicine, focused on patients with seasonal affective disorder because they have experienced major depressive episodes in winter. They found high density negative ions to be as effective as light therapy in the treatment of this disorder.

The low density was ineffective.The trial was conducted in a true "double-blind, randomized," since humans are unable to perceive or detect the level of ions in the flow of air. Since the first clinical trial, the effect has been replicated in patients with chronic non-seasonal depression, most of which have had an inadequate response to antidepressant drugs. After clinical trials published in Archives of General Psychiatry, Psychological Medicine and the American Journal of Psychiatry responded and extended the effect, even including patients with chronic non-seasonal depression.

Recent technological advances have led to the development of small, compact ion generators that can produce levels of ion density sufficient for biological effects. Although the original clinical trial was based on ion exposure during the day in timed treatment sessions, most recently, the method has also been shown to work during sleep, providing a harmless, effective and automatic imperceptible antidepressant in a few weeks. So far, however, there has been no study of the additional potential benefit of combining the negative ion therapy with drugs air or light treatments.

The dosage of negative ions of air appears to be critical for its mood-enhancing effect. Very high levels are needed, above expected levels in most air purifiers standard of the house. Clinical trials of negative air ionization have maximized the dose (or ion flux for the subject) with a wrist strap (for daytime use) or bed sheet (for use during sleep), reducing flow to other objects on the ground in the environment such as radiators, walls, and radio / TV.
