More magical than others.

Although the production has some shortcomings, its many strengths make it an apt reinterpretation of Shakespeare's romantic comedy-fantasy as well as a fitting 30 th-anniversary revival of the first play that the troupe staged, in 1981.

Beth Kattelman and Dee Shepherd co-directed with imagination, wit and an understanding of the comic and dramatic power of unrequited love.

Just as the fairy Puck drives the plot with flower potions that make characters fall in love with the first person they see, Dayton Willison drives the production as Puck.

At the opening Thursday in Schiller Park, Willison was more mischievous - and even malevolent - than many other Pucks, taking fiendish delight in his supernatural shenanigans.

After somewhat-perfunctory introductions in the expository first act, Jennifer Collins, Vince Reese, Julia Free and A. John Beeler find their strengths as the two pairs of mismatched lovers - Hermia, Lysander, Helena and Demetrius - in the far-funnier second act.

While Beeler and Reese vie like jealous siblings for a woman's attentions with joyful bits of slapstick, Collins and Free cope amusingly and poignantly with their own insecurities.

Two performers make a memorable pair: John Beeker, as an endearing Bottom; and Lori Cannon, initially formidable as Titania, the fairy queen who, under Puck's spell, becomes infatuated with a donkey-headed Bottom.

Yet can a production simultaneously be magical and imperfect?

Apparently so.

Puck, Titania and Bottom are among the rich characters who consistently deliver the Bard's dialogue with delightful spirit, but some actors fall into a grating singsong that undercuts some lines.

Moreover, although the puppets and costumes are colorful, the scenic design seems oddly shaped, garish and cluttered.

Moreover, although the puppets and costumes are colorful, the scenic design seems oddly shaped, garish and cluttered. Still, at a brisk two hours and 10 minutes, the overall production is so charming and funny that A Midsummer Night's Dream works well

JACK Andrew-Kabilafkas’ satirical poke at the sensationalist nature of news has won him the title of best play at the Fast+Fresh Theatre Festival in Sydney.

The year 10 Hills Grammar student won with his 10 minute comedy Only the Important News.

``I wasn’t expecting to go nearly as far as we did,’’ Jack said.

``I hadn’t really written a play by myself before but I just thought I’d go for it.’‘

Jack wrote the play about a morning news show covering the Cyclone Yasi disaster for the school’s year 10 drama class assignment.

``It’s about that sort of sensationalist nature in the news industry,’’ he said.

He performed with fellow students Liam O’Doherty, Anna Sneddon, David O’Neil, James Millis, Anna Nia and Milla Boulden.

After performing the play at the Hills Grammar school’s festival in April, it was selected as an entrant into the Fast+ Fresh Theatre.

The school’s head of drama Stephen Clark said he believed the play deserved to win in the final gala at Riverside Theatres on June 3.

``It’s very insightful and fits the 21st century because it plays around with the idea of what news networks think is newsworthy,’’ Mr Clark said.

Only the Important News is now in consideration for selection into Short+Sweet Theatre, the biggest festival of 10-minute theatre in the world.
