Old-fashioned romance in a gorgeous setting
The sun is bright. The water is crystal blue. Yachts line the bay, and servants doling out martinis are everywhere.What’s hard to take about “Monte Carlo”?
Admittedly ultra-light and ultra-predictable, the film is yet another reminder that after nuclear fallout and the end of the world, two things likely will survive – roaches and puppy love.
This time, 18-year-old Selena Gomez replaces Sandra Dee as the gee-whiz teen looking for a boy but pretending she isn’t.
Once, it was easy to find movies like this – gorgeous Technicolor travelogues where girls found romance amid the exotic scenery.
“Monte Carlo” harkens back to 1960’s “Where the Boys Are” (Fort Lauderdale spring break) and 1954’s “Three Coins in the Fountain” (three American girls on the loose in beautifully photographed Rome).
In “Monte Carlo,” Gomez’s Grace is a Texas waitress who long has saved her pennies for a trip to Europe.
Although initially disappointed in her quickie bus tour and closet-sized hotel room, Grace’s fortunes are about to change. She is mistaken for a snooty British heiress named Cordelia and is inherits the snob’s hotel suite as well as her handsome, upper-crust boyfriend.
Folks let the mistaken identity slide because the heiress is needed to attend a charity event, and even a fill-in is better than no heiress at all.
Cordelia dismisses charities as low-life tributes to “polar bears or hungry people,” so Grace-as-Cordelia is welcome to wear the designer fashions, emerald necklace and general demeanor of the affluent at party time.
The mix-up is good for viewers, too. After being almost beaten into deafness by “Transformers” and rocked into a near-nap by “Larry Crowne,” we can relax and snack at this summer flick.
Gomez isn’t yet ready to carry a movie, but she does convince us that Grace is a nice girl, and “nice” is all that is needed here. Gomez is out of her league, however, when she tries to play Cordelia, the look-alike socialite with a dark side.
In movies like this, you can bet that no one will be left lonely in the end, and “Monte Carlo” doesn’t disappoint. The passenger list for Noah’s Ark wasn’t more carefully matched.
Pierre Boulanger plays the prince-like chap who is mystified when the usually evil Cordelia transforms into a sweet miss who makes him forget his royal duties.
