Walking for a cure
Relay for LifeRelay for Life raises money to find a cure for cancer through the American Cancer Society. Teams have until August to continue to raise money for this year’s event.
Relay began in 1985 when Dr. Gordy Klatt, a colorectal surgeon in Tacoma, Wash., ran and walked around a track for 24 hours to raise money for the American Cancer Society, according to the Relay for Life website.
Each year, more than 3.5 million people in 5,000 communities in the United States, along with additional communities in 20 other countries, gather to take part in this global phenomenon and raise funds and awareness to save lives from cancer.
Hundreds of people gathered around the East Linn Christian Academy track with a common purpose: to find a cure for cancer.
It was Lebanon’s annual Relay for Life, which benefits the American Cancer Society.
For some members of the 35 teams, this was a tradition. For others, it was their first time.
Heather Hess was one of those first-timers.
“I’m having a blast,” she said as she walked a lap in platform, knee-high boots and a newspaper and duct tape dress she made herself for a Relay competition.
“These boots are killing my feet,” Hess said. “One lap and they are coming off after this.”
Many competitions helped break up the laps, but perhaps the most popular was the Miss Relay Pageant.
About a dozen men donned dresses, some with feather boas, others in spiked, thigh-high boots, all looking absolutely glamorous, and competed for Miss Relay.
After the biography of each was read to the crowd, the men took a lap to raise more money for the cure.
A disc jockey and live music by Hometown Classics provided a beat for the walkers. Band member Kevin Martinez sang “The Dance” with 10-year-old Isabella Miller, survivor of Ewing’s sarcoma.
A member of each team had to be on the track walking at all times during the 24-hour event.
At the Samaritan Lebanon Community Hospital tent, pictures were set up of Frankie Gray, who survived breast cancer, but passed away on May 27. She was an active participant in the Relay for Life event.
One member of that team printed out Gray’s picture on stickers, so everyone who wanted could “walk a lap with Frankie.”
Survivors walked in purple shirts, and there were many of them. Before the survivor lap, Elaine Wolfe, spoke about how she was no longer afraid of the word cancer. At 90, she is battling lymphoma.
