Cakes, cards and crafting professionally - MFM heads to Creative Park

A few weeks ago, MFM dug out its Pritt Stick and safety scissors and headed to The Make Lounge to get crafty with Canon’s Creative Park.

A perfect introduction to the fun of homemade cards and an easy way to encourage children to get into craft, Creative Park is a free website packed full of printable kits that can be cut out and and folded into cards for any occasion. If you’re feeling particularly nifty with your hands, you can also make scrapbooks, origami, photo frames and albums.

Now here at MFM aren’t we’re not so crafty – we’re a dab hand at making a sandwich, but when it comes to cards, we’re more likely to pop into Paperchase and rustle up something homemade and beautiful. But that is all set to change…!

Greeted at the London Islington’s Make Lounge by a table full of scones and trifles, we immediately started getting into the homemade ethos. Several scones later, we felt ready to get in on this crafting craze, as directed by a Crafting Professional, (how do you get to be one of those, then?) Sarah Beaman. We plumped for a design that seemed to be within our skill range but that would be suitably impressive to return to the office with.

Our chosen design beautiful pop-up  - oh yes – card, into which you can insert a photo. Other options were more basic cards or if you’re feeling brave, even fiddlier options that pop out in all directions. The most impressive was a two-inch high, incredibly complex birdcage that MFM could not fathom how to do.

If you have a Canon printer, when you log into the website, it will recognise that you’re a customer and allow you into a special members-own section. But even if you’re not, you still have access to an incredible number of patterns and printouts for free.

Pick your design, then download and print your PDF pack, which contains instructions and the various pieces you need to cut out to stick together and become your finished masterpiece.

Canon recommends using good quality (Canon) photo paper or card when you print out the designs so the colours and patterns you see on your screen, translate well to the finished product. Then, get out the scissors and cut out, following the instructions, before folding along the dashed lines and getting out your glue. You’ll be creating fabulous works Blue Peter stylee in no time.

Et voila! After letting all the glue dry and resisting the urge to pop up my card, close it and pop it up again repeatedly, you’d never even know I made it, it is that good. With easy options for children and beginners and more complicated options that would make beautiful nursery designs, including The Very Hungry Catterpiller and other storybook faves, it’s a fab resource and best of all, it’s free! Dust off those ink cartridges and get your little workforce creating handmade cards for all your friends!

Photo Craft: Newsletter #156 - July 1, 2011

We're having a lot of fun and excitement with the newest local crafting releases. Dandelion Designs has 4 new cling stamp sets, each with a creative project including instructions and a pattern. Sister Stamps has 3 cling stamps with a very cute Asian girl, releasing on July 1st (with another release of 3 cling stamps scheduled for a Sept. 1st release). And Photo Craft has a new custom wafer die for its newly formed WikiCAPS product line. This first die features 5 sizes of a Cherry Blossom Outline , plus two different centers in 4 sizes. We will be promoting all of this at the Rubber Stamp & Scrapbook Expo this Saturday, July 2nd at the Neal Blaisdell Center – Hawaii Suites, from 10:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. As a special treat, Claire Sato will be conducting a free Make & Take at our tables for this show. She'll be featuring a quick favor box idea using Photo Craft's All Natural Accents line of paper flowers and leaves. Photo Craft's email newsletter is now available on our new blog . We'll also be posting photos of the recent Make & Takes on the blog. If you've been having problems receiving our newsletter from the Yahoo group, you may have an easier time viewing the most current Photo Craft newsletter here. You may also subscribe to the blog to be notified when a new posting to the blog has been made. Our classes are starting to sell out with our new, improved workshop area. We don't want to be in the position of turning away people from a sold out class and later finding that some people did not show up. So we are now asking for all class fees to be paid in advance. You can either mail in a check, or we can take credit charges over the phone, whichever you prefer. Class fees will be non-refundable unless you cancel in time for us to fill your reserved class space. But if you've missed a class, we'll always save the class materials for you. Thanks for your understanding and cooperation. This Make & Take is a repeat. The M&T Favor box is just soooo cute because it's in the shape of a strawberry. There many dot patterned cardstocks that would work for this project that we'll further embellish with leaves and white strawberry flowers. We've have customers that hand cut smaller strawberry boxes, but this one is made super easy with a Sizzix BigShot Pro die, an embossing folder, scuffers, ribbon, and a few paper flowers.
