New space to have Firehouse Subs, Virginia ABC store

June 12--Firehouse Subs and a Virginia ABC store will open locations inside new retail space being built by Kroger near Towne Square Shopping Center in northwest Roanoke.

The ABC store will be relocating from its current space across the street at Towne Square to the new retail space, said ABC spokeswoman Rebecca Gettings.

Gettings said the space is ready, and that ABC will be working on the finishing touches in the coming weeks.

"It could be a few months until the relocation takes place," she said.

As for Firehouse, the new northwest Roanoke location is part of a larger expansion of the sandwich chain's presence in the New River and Roanoke valleys, said Mike Pietrzyk, the area franchise developer for Firehouse in the Virginia and West Virginia markets.

Pietrzyk said this newest Firehouse location likely will open in November.

Firehouse and ABC are two of the three tenants that will occupy a new retail center being built by Kroger next to its grocery store on Rutgers Street.

Millie Moore with Retail Real Estate, who handles leasing for the center, said the third tenant has leased the remaining space, but she would not disclose the name of the business.

The new retail space also included plans to open a pharmacy kiosk in the parking lot to offer drive-through pharmacy services for customers. The kiosk is complete, said Carl York, spokesman for Kroger's Mid-Atlantic office in Roanoke, but employees are being trained, and it is not yet open for the public.

"It should be ready for public use soon," York said.

A building permit application was filed last month to prepare the space for Firehouse at an estimated cost of $125,000, according to city records. The permit for the work has not yet been approved.

The addition of this new Firehouse Subs location will make it the fifth in the Roanoke market. Currently Firehouse has two locations in Roanoke and one in Salem. A fourth Firehouse is slated to open June 20 on University City Boulevard in Blacksburg.

Ed Johnston, the franchisee opening the Blacksburg location, also will be responsible for the new Towne Square location, Pietrzyk said.

"The brand started taking off dramatically this year" nationally, Pietrzyk said.

He said he is hoping to capture that momentum locally by opening stores throughout the region. He added that he is actively looking for franchisees to open stores in Christiansburg, Radford, Botetourt, Rocky Mount, Martinsville, Danville and Lynchburg.
